Jim Carney Memorial Training Scholarship

In memory of the late Captain Jim Carney, the Plain Township New Albany Firefighters Foundation (NAFF), a 501(c)(3) organization, will fund a Scholarship to assist Locals of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) in Ohio to sponsor higher education conferences for their members. This may include meetings of the IAFF or Ohio Association of Professional Firefighters (OAPFF).

We are honored to launch the Jim Carney Memorial Scholarship. Jim worked for the Plain Township Fire Department. He was a tireless fighter for union rights and was instrumental in establishing many of the protections firefighters and medics have today. This scholarship would not be possible without the support of his family, friends, and community members who have donated to the NAFF in his name.

Requirements for Local Applicants:

  • Must be a chartered Local of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) in good standing;
  • Must describe the conference or program for which the scholarship will be used with documentation of the event (this may include a website);
  • Must complete the enclosed application (attached);
  • Must complete an essay explaining to the NAFF how this scholarship will assist your members;
  • Must complete an interview by the NAFF Board if requested; and
  • Cannot be an immediate family member or have a direct financial relationship with a NAFF board member.

Scholarships will be awarded 1-2 times yearly (January and June) by the NAFF Board of Directors. The NAFF is not required to provide any scholarships if, in the opinion of the NAFF Board, there are no qualified or suitable applicants. Before receiving scholarship monies, Locals must provide the NAFF board with proof of registration for the conference or educational program so the amounts can be reimbursed to the Locals. If the selected Local does not attend the conference or educational program for any reason, the Local will be expected to reimburse the NAFF.
